On each hourly exam and the final you will receive a numerical and a letter grade. The letter grade will be based on a curve. At the end of the semester the total points will be placed on a curve and your letter grade will be assigned. No exams will be dropped and no makeups will be given. If you miss an exam, and if you have a valid excuse, your semester grade will be based on the remaining exams, the final, the assignments, and the poster/oral presentation. Otherwise, you will receive an F and a 0 for that exam. Homework problems will be suggested but they will be neither collected nor graded. If you would like to discuss your answers, please see the instructor. Attendance will be taken on a daily basis. You are allowed up to six absences after which your semester grade will be dropped by one full letter grade per absence. Environmental Chemistry Articles: During the course of the semester you are to peruse the current popular press (newspapers, magazines etc. not the internet) and clip articles that are related to environmental chemistry. These are to be submitted to the instructor as you find them, with the discussion of environmental chemistry highlighted. If they are accepted by the instructor they will be worth up to 20 points (maximum of five submissions). You may be asked to make a 5 minute presentation to the class on your article, so be prepared when you submit it. Poster/Oral Presentation: The first Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge (PGCC) Awards were awarded in July 1996 (see: Chemical and Engineering News, July 15, 1996, pages 9-10). The 2010 & 2011 annual awards were presented at ceremonies in June 2010 and June 2011 in Washington, DC (see: Chemical and Engineering News, June 28, 2010, Honors: Presidential challenge awards recognize innovations that promote sustainability.; June 27, 2011, 2011 Green Chemistry Awards). These awards honor individuals and/or companies for developing and implementing chemistry/technology that reduces or eliminates pollution at the source. You and your team member will research the background of one of the 2010 or 2011 awards and present it as a poster and an oral presentation. Posters will be set up by 2:00 P.M. in the third floor hallway, Loyola Hall on Wednesday 11/09/11. Your poster should include, in the following order: 1) -a brief description of the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards ( HYPERLINK "http://www.epa.gov/greenchemistry/pubs/pgcc/presgcc.html" http://www.epa.gov/greenchemistry/pubs/pgcc/presgcc.html) 2) -abstract 3) -what the prior art in the field was. 4) -what the new use, process or chemical is and how it reduces pollution at the source. 5) -bibliography Remember this is an environmental chemistry class and you should emphasize the chemistry involved and how it effects the environment. Your poster presentation must fit on a 4' x 3' bulletin board. For a sample of what a poster looks like, stop by my office. In addition to the poster, you must give a 15 minute oral presentation complete with visual aids tentatively on the evening of Sunday, November 13, 5:30 P.M. (room to be announced). Visual aids may be overhead transparencies or a PowerPoint (preferred) presentation (generally the poster is not sufficient as a visual aid for an oral presentation since it cant be viewed from afar). I will send you electronic copies of the 2010 & 2011 award winning PGCC proposals. Each team must select one of these proposals and notify the instructor of the selection. Selection is on a first come, first served basis. You should hit the reply all button to the email containing the proposals and this will not only inform the instructor of your selection but also the other students. Information regarding the proposals should be obtained from references in the proposal, direct interaction with the contact person listed on the proposal, searching the web and searching the printed literature (via STN, see me).
